“You get a slice of bread, You get a slice of bread. Everybody get’s a slice of bread!”

Oprah Winfrey claims she’s lost 26 pounds all while eating bread daily. “I don’t deny myself bread. I have bread every single day,” Winfrey says in her recent Weight Watcher’s commercial. So what’s the deal? Can you really eat bread daily and lose weight and is it actually healthy for you?

Yes, it is possible to eat bread daily and lose weight, but it does not mean you should rush to the nearest bakery and stock up. First, keep in mind, a 30 second commercial does not share many details of Oprah’s actual healthy living protocol. If you really want to eat bread + lose weight, you must gather all the facts.

How To Eat Bread and Lose Weight

① Choose The Highest Quality Ingredients

It’s safe to say Oprah is not chowing down on muffins + bagels for breakfast everyday. She mentions in a youtube video that she seeks out the grainiest and nuttiest bread she can find which also happens to be the most nutritious.

② Be Mindful Of Portion Sizes

She may eat bread everyday, but she stops after one slice. She pairs a slice of her nutty grainy bread with a small amount of avocado, basil, and turkey for breakfast. The healthy fat and protein from the avocado and turkey keep her feeling satisfied and full so she won’t crave additional bread during the day.

③ Go Beyond The Diet

Although it’s not mentioned, it’s likely that Oprah is incorporating more healthy habits into her routine like increasing her exercise time or avoiding unhealthy food groups like those high in sugar and sodium content. She may also have banned a bad habit like drinking soda or mindless late night munching. These healthy add-ons will support her in losing weight while eating bread.

Find Your Healthy Bread Balance

Although you can lose weight following Oprah’s daily bread breaking plan, it’s not an ideal long-term solution to reach your optimal health. Your body craves a variety of nutrients so it can perform at it’s best. Eating bread ‘daily’ will not provide you with the variety and nourishment that you really need. What we can take away from this is that it’s ok to lighten up on the restrictive 100% carb free mentality. You should relax knowing that you can enjoy eating your favorite foods (pizza, bread, pasta, etc.) all in moderation, especially when you focus on only consuming high quality ingredients.

The bottom line is to take all crazy weight loss stories with a grain of salt and keep your focus on eating real whole foods as this will never be a passing trend!
