Early Bird Gets The Worm
For many of us waking up in the morning is a struggle! Our alarm goes off, and we think our only salvation is to hit snooze for “just a couple more minutes”. But, wouldn’t it be wonderful to have the desire to jump out of bed each morning and seize the day? Morning people do just that. They wake up and hit the ground running. It might sound impossible, but you can train yourself to become an early riser. You might be surprised to find what you can accomplish when you get up and go with a positive attitude.
7 Habits of Early Risers
① No Electronics Before Bed.
Commit to powering down all electronics an hour before you go to sleep – yes I mean your iPhone too! This will help your brain calm down and make you fall asleep faster. And trust me, that extra 10 min. scrolling on FB or Instagram will not do you any good. Change up your nighttime routine to do something relaxing like, taking a bath, reading a book, journaling, or meditating.
② Morning Me Time.
Pour yourself a cup of lemon water, coffee, or tea and take time to stop and sip. Each morning, I sit with my coffee and write out a gratitude list of 15 things I am thankful for. Gratitude is grounding and centers me before I step into the craziness of the day ahead. Even setting some time aside to read the paper or catch the news will give you that little moment for yourself.
③ Listen To Feel Good Music or Podcasts.
While getting ready for your day, listen to upbeat music or a great podcast. I love to listen to a motivating audio book while I’m cooking breakfast and then switch to my favorite jams while I take a shower and get ready.
④ Get Your Workout In.
Even a little bit of exercise in the morning –stretching, yoga or a quick jog— can set you up for a healthier day. Exercising first thing will make you inclined to eat healthier during the day and it will increase your energy and productivity. Leave your workout clothes out the night before so you don’t have to think.
⑤ Enjoy A Balanced Breakfast.
Energize yourself in the morning with a hearty and healthy breakfast. You will feel less fatigued throughout the day and more cheerful in the mornings. If you’re not into cooking in the morning, prepare your breakfast the night before. Try overnight oats, hard-boiled eggs, or ready to go protein muffins.
⑥ Stick To Your Routine.
Don’t screw up your body clock by waking up early on weekdays and sleeping in till 12PM on weekends. Try to set a sleeping routine by waking up at the same time every day. Imagine all the things you can manage to do on your days off if you wake up couple of hours earlier. Plus, Monday morning won’t be such a buzz kill.
⑦ Plan Something To Look Forward To Each Day.
Stop counting down the days to the weekend to be excited about something. Give yourself a reason to hop out of bed on a daily basis. It might be something small like catching up with a friend, trying a new place for lunch, or cleaning your apartment so you can enjoy it. Make it so you are waking up because you want to, not because you have to.
Start your morning person transformation today. Although, these changes are not drastic, they may throw you out your comfort zone or I should say comfortable bed. Start small – maybe commit to only hit the snooze button once or to set your alarm for just 5 min. earlier! Beginning your morning with the right activities and approach will set a positive tone for the rest of your day.
